Mastering Test Instructions: Boosting Adult Learners’ Confidence and Success

Test instructions can be tricky, especially for adult learners who may struggle with reading comprehension or unfamiliar language. Misinterpreting these instructions can lead to unnecessary mistakes and lower scores. However, with the right approach, adult learners can gain the confidence and skills they need to succeed. In this post, we’ll explore several strategies instructors can use to help their learners better understand test instructions and boost their chances for success.

Five Ways to Master Test Instructions

1. Decode the language.

  • Simplify complex terminology.

Testing instructions often use formal language. Replace jargon or complex terms with simpler, everyday language. For example, instead of “analyze,” say “explain in detail.”

  • Provide examples.

Illustrate what key instructional words mean with concrete examples. If the instructions say “compare and contrast,” provide a simple comparison example relevant to the subject matter.

  • Create a glossary.

For recurring terms, develop a classroom glossary of testing instruction terms with clear definitions and examples.

2. Break it down.

  • Chunk the instructions.

Present instructions in smaller, manageable chunks rather than one long paragraph. Use bullet points or numbered lists.

  • Model “think-aloud”.

Demonstrate how to read instructions step-by-step. Pause to verbalize your thought process and highlight key words.

  • Decode collaboratively.

Have learners work in pairs or small groups to read and paraphrase the instructions in their own words.

3. Visualize and clarify.

  • Use visual aids.

Use diagrams, flowcharts, or mind maps to visually represent the steps or tasks outlined in the instructions.

  • Highlight key words.

Use different colors or underlining to emphasize important words like “not,” “only,” or “all.”

  • “Question the instructions” activity.

Before the test, have students write down any questions they have about the instructions, then address them as a class.

4. Practice makes perfect.

  • Practice with sample tests.

Use practice tests or quizzes with similar instruction formats to the real test.

  • Instruction-focused feedback.

When reviewing practice tests, give feedback on the content and how well students followed the instructions.

  • Create your own instructions.

Have students create their own sets of instructions for a simple task, then have their peers try to follow them. This highlights the importance of clarity.

5. Address individual needs.

  • Support learning differences.

Be mindful of learners with dyslexia or other reading challenges. Provide extra time, larger font sizes, or audio versions of instructions.

  • Help overcome language barriers.

For ESL learners, provide translated instructions or use visual aids to support comprehension.

Final Thoughts
